Financial Planning for College-Bound Families
A clear plan for the biggest investment you'll make in your kids.
Paying for college involves rising tuition, confusing financial aid rules, and pressure to get it right the first time. You want to give your kids every opportunity without derailing your own retirement or financial security.
Capstone Wealth Partners is a fee-only fiduciary financial planning firm helping families across the country build a college funding strategy that fits inside a broader financial plan, not one that competes with it. Two futures, one plan.
Common questions college-bound families bring to us
- How much should we actually be saving, and where?
- Will a 529 plan hurt our financial aid eligibility?
- Should we prioritize college savings or our own retirement?
- How do we compare what different schools will really cost us?
- What can we do now that our student is already in high school?
If any of these sound familiar, you haven’t had a plan built around your specific family yet.
How we help college-bound families plan with confidence
College funding as part of your whole financial picture
We build college savings into the same goals-based plan that covers retirement, cash flow, and tax planning. The advice you get accounts for what your family can actually afford, not just what a generic savings calculator recommends.
529 plans and college investment options
We help you establish and manage a 529 plan, or evaluate whether it’s the right tool for your family, and build an investment approach that considers your timeline and risk tolerance as your student gets closer to enrollment.
Financial aid strategy
Small decisions, like how assets are titled or which accounts you draw from, can change what your family is expected to pay. We help you understand your financial aid outlook and make choices that work in your favor.
A personalized College Money Report™
For families who want a clear, side-by-side view of what college will cost, we offer a College Money Report™: a personalized comparison across your student’s target schools, led by Joe Messinger, CFP® and Certified College Financial Consultant (CCFC). Your Roadmap Through the College Cost Decision
The report shows you where you stand. The roadmap shows you what to do about it. Saving for college is only part of the work. The harder part is deciding where to apply, reading what colleges send back, and paying for it without putting your retirement at risk. We go beyond saving, and we guide you through the financial aid process step by step, so every decision is made with a clear view of what it is likely to cost.
1. Prepare for the Cost of College
Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior Year
The best planning starts before applications do. We help you estimate what college is likely to cost, decide what your family can comfortably pay or borrow, and fit college around your retirement and other goals. Timing matters here, because the FAFSA uses tax information from two years earlier. Decisions made around your child’s junior year can affect the first year of aid.
2. Apply for Admission & Scholarships
August to November of Senior Year
As you build your list of schools, we help you look at the likely price of each one alongside its admission odds. Merit scholarships vary widely by school, and many have early deadlines, so we help you keep track of what is due and when.
3. Apply for Financial Aid
October of Senior Year
The FAFSA opens in October, and some schools also require the CSS Profile. We help you complete both accurately and on time, since errors and missed deadlines can cost you aid.
4. Analyze & Appeal Financial Aid Offers
March to April of Senior Year
Award letters are formatted differently from school to school and are easy to misread. We separate grants and scholarships from loans and work-study, compare what each school would cost over four years, and help you appeal where your circumstances warrant it. Schools decide whether to adjust an offer, and results vary.
5. Choose the Right School & Accept Your Award
April of Senior Year
With the full numbers in front of you, the decision rests on fit and cost together. We help you decide which offer to accept and which parts of it, such as certain loans, to decline.
6. Evaluate Options to Cover the Shortfall
May of Senior Year
Most families still have a gap after aid. We weigh your options, which can include cash flow, savings, payment plans, and federal or private loans, against the effect on your retirement plan. We plan the funding for all four years, not only the first, and review it each year.
Financial aid eligibility and award amounts are determined by colleges and government agencies. We cannot guarantee any aid outcome or level of savings.
The Capstone Way
College planning evolves as your student gets closer to applying and your own financial picture changes. We design a plan around your goals, build the strategy through research and coordinated planning, and protect it with regular check-ins as things shift.
Pricing
Planning for college-bound families is $300 – $500 per month, based on the complexity of your situation. Fees may be waived at certain managed investment portfolio levels.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. When should we start planning for college costs?
Whether your child is a toddler or a high school junior, there are meaningful moves you can still make to improve your financial aid position and reduce what you pay out of pocket.
2. Will saving for college hurt our chances of getting financial aid?
It depends on how and where you save. Certain account types and ownership structures are treated more favorably in financial aid formulas than others. We help you structure your savings to support your goals without unnecessarily working against your aid eligibility.
3. Do you only work with families who already have a lot saved for college?
No. We work with families at every stage, from those just starting a 529 plan to those with a student a year from enrollment.
4. How is this different from a 529 plan calculator I could use myself?
Online calculators give you a generic number. We build a strategy that fits inside your full financial life, your income, your retirement timeline, and your other goals, and account for the financial aid rules that affect what you’ll actually pay.
5. What's the difference between this and the College Pre-Approval™ Session?
The College Pre-Approval™ Session is a focused, 90-minute consultation and personalized comparison of what you’ll owe at your student’s top schools. It’s a good starting point, but it’s a snapshot and it is only for one student. We guide you through all six steps, from preparing for the cost of college through covering any shortfall, and we tie each decision to your retirement, tax, and investment planning.
